Black Lion MICROCLOCKMK2 External Word Clock Generator 9 Volts DC
The Micro Clock MKII is a simple, yet elegant design in external clocking. It features ultra-low jitter, third order crystal oscillators with a high current parallel drive circuit designed to maintain harmonic content of the signal regardless of loading conditions. In addition to this, proprietary noise reduction circuitry dramatically eliminates unwanted switching harmonics normally found in digital signals. The Micro Clock MKII is one of the best performing external word clocks in the pro audio market today.
When we introduced the Micro Clock MKII, we didn’t anticipate the amount of demand and controversy that managed to accompany it. External clocking is certainly a hot button issue. Some folks maintain that there’s no basis for it; that it’s a sort of modern “emperor’s new clothes.” The reasoning behind this is that the device being clocked externally will simply filter the incoming clock signal through its phase locked loop, thereby eliminating any sort of benefit associated with the superior clock. In addition, the simple act of accepting the incoming signal and creating a new signal that’s in phase will add some jitter.
The biggest problem with this theory is that we know nothing about the PLL filter in question; it’s completely hypothetical. Many PLL’s in pro audio are designed to filter out unwanted signals that are outside of the desired bandwidth, although some are configured to filter out unwanted harmonics that lie within the signal’s frequency band. It’s incredibly rare to find one that does both at the same time. In the case of the Micro Clock MKII, it outputs a high bandwidth signal that is rare to find in internal clocks. Whether or not an external word clock can improve the sound quality of a receiving device is completely dependent on how the receiving device accepts an external word clock signal, and is dependant on the quality of the receiving device’s internal clock. It’s best to do an A/B listening comparison to know whether the external clock is making a positive impact on the sound or not.
The Micro Clock MKII is simple and probably even boring looking by most standards. It’s housed in a rugged 3” x 4” chassis that provides optimum RF shielding. It has no lights, no frequency display, and none of the usual visual candy that your friends might envy. However, for a modest black box, it does its job incredibly well and at a price that’s unheard of for this level of performance!
It features six selectable output frequencies from 44.1 kHz on up to 192 kHz. The output level is approximately 5 volts peak to peak. Jitter at the crystal oscillator is approximately 1 picosecond RMS, and just under 10 picoseconds RMS at the output. The power supply is a 9 volt DC wall wart that’s capable of accepting both 120 and 240 volts AC. The clock is compatible with all modern digital devices that have 75 ohm BNC word clock inputs.
Front:
Base frequency selector (44.1kHz or 48kHz)
75 ohm BNC outputs
Frequency multiplier (x1, x2, x4)
Back
9VDC input jack (use a BLA-specified power supply only)

Output: 3 BNC with fixed 75 ohm terminations @ 5 volts peak to peak
Power: 9 volts DC
Sampling rates: Six selectable rates, 44.1 kHz-192 kHz (44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192)

Black Lion REVOLUTION 2X2 USB 2 Channel Portable Recording Audio Interface
Modded out of the box.
Revolution 2×2 is built with the most cutting edge, high-end ICs. High-end Vishay, Nichicon, and Wima capacitors are used throughout the entire circuit. All internal gain-staging has been optimized for the very lowest signal-to-noise ratio. All of the analog I/O has not only been built with the finest components, but are fully decoupled and balanced — right to the very core of the convertor! Most manufacturers do not follow this practice, and that allows extra noise contamination during both capture and playback.
Black Lion Audio have been revered as the “king of audio mods” for years, and have modded countless recording interfaces over the years. But since the very beginning, we’ve been asked when we would create our own interface. So, we planned, engineered, and worked — all in secret, for years. It took an impressive amount of design to revolutionize bus-powered, studio-grade interfaces.
Now we are responding with Revolution 2×2: the ultimate in portable recording interfaces. Revolution isn’t another run-of-the-mill interface from big brother — it’s the interface the world has always asked for. Don’t just settle for the cheap and portable. Get an interface that can do more than just sketch out a demo… get one that can actually track a top-level record from start to finish.

Black Lion B172A Stereo Dual Mono Link Hybrid FET Optical Compressor
Double the classy in a single chassis, the B172A marries the Seventeen version of the legendary “76” FET limiter with our take on the renowned “2A” tube optical compressor. Whether you use the FET and opto separately — or in series, where one catches the audio’s peaks and the other provides the heavy compression — the B172A will blow you away with its incredible sound and versatility.
The B172A’s Dual Mono Link makes it easy to route your signal through the 17 and 2A circuits in any order. Painstaking effort went into choosing the best transformers needed for each circuit. Spec’d with a CineMag input transformer on the 2A side, BLA’s own Chicago-wound output transformers on both circuits, high-grade signal path and decoupling capacitors, the B172A gives you ultra-convenient access to a pair of classic dynamics processors while also providing a valuable signal processing tool never before available in a single chassis.
Every so often, two incredible things, wholly enjoyable on their own, combine to form a pair so sweet and complementary, that it becomes hard to think of one without the other… Sonny &; Cher, Lennon & McCartney, Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre… and perhaps the greatest and most literal “dynamic duo” of all time – the 1176 and LA-2A!
The combo attack of the ’76 and ‘2A has been a studio stable for decades, often wired in series with each other so that one catches the audio’s peaks and the other does the heavy compression. Black Lion Audio, having hit the mark with the widely adored Seventeen compressor, has struck again, combining the Seventeen’s FET circuitry with a worthy optical section in the B172A! This unit combines the two separate ’76 and 2A circuits into a single unit that allows you to route the signal in any order you like to be able to provide this very useful compression technique.
The Seventeen’s success put pressure on BLA to pair the already proven FET side with an equally formidable optical mate. The challenge was met on the B172A through the creation of a custom T4B “opto” element called the “T4BLA”. BLA’s lengthy experience in modifications lent designers the proper patience and mindset to tweak subtleties in the optical element until it was a supreme asset in the design. With a heavy attention to detail and design, the T4BLA is designed to be the single best T4B optocell available today.
Flexibility was a main goal of the B172A since its initial concept. While many engineers agree on the benefits of using both compression types, the order in which to do so is still debated. The AB-BA switch on the B172A allows for quick internal routing of the signal. The two compressors can also be used completely independent of each other when utilizing the 3rd position (link off) on the AB-BA switch. Each circuit also has stereo linking so a pair of B172A’s can be used in stereo.
As always, a painstaking amount of time has been spent on choosing the best possible transformers needed for the circuit. Featuring a CineMag input transformer on the LA-2A side, BLA’s own Chicago-wound output transformers on both circuits, high-grade signal path and decoupling capacitors, the B172A gives studio owners ultra convenient access to a pair of high quality dynamics processors that have stood the test of time while also providing a tool never before available in a single box.
